GLORIA BURGUNDIA
Written by BM_DM

Really, I'm not quite sure how to categorize a band that features the spoons as an instrument. Yes, spoons, and high in the mix too

So, Gloria Burgundia has harsh vocals, blastbeats, dueling melodic guitars, orthodox black metal strumming, symphonic keyboards, accordion, mouth harp, banjo, clean singing, more spoons, plus lots of whooping, clapping, shouting and a hoedown to round things off, and that's just the track Vae Victis, although bare in mind it is a little over 9 minutes long, there is plenty of time to fit it all in

Normally, this kind of wanton eclecticism would have me reaching for the eject b*tton within seconds, but I have to say that I found myself enjoying this release more every time I hear it

You'll find yourself spending most of your first listen wondering what they'll do next. Whilst I think it fair to say that you have to be in the right mood to get along with this release, it is a refreshingly honest and forthright performance that simply wins the listener over, and everyone seems to be enjoying themselves enormously. I imagine an Astaarth show would be a riot!

Tr00 and kvlt it isn't, but open ears will be rewarded

7.5 out of 10

Now, i know the name Damon Albarn wont mean much to many of you, but i was sat in quiet pondering, and i realised Astaarth remind me of to a movie called ''Ravenous'' which he scored, not saying they sound alike, just they have similar unconventional feeling to them *

Interview by Seb, 2009

Hi Lord Moloch, before anything can you introduce us to Astaarth and give a brief history?

The date of formation of the group was back in 1996. After various changes of members and the release of a demo called History Of Our Yesterday's Pride and an alb*m called Golden Age Of A Dead Empire. In 2007, the group consists of 8 members. That same year we released Gloria Burgundia

You released in 2007 your latest alb*m entitled Gloria Burgundia. Can you please tell us about it? I imagine that putting this alb*m up has been complicated?

The alb*m contains 7 tracks of Burgundian Pagan black metal. It is a mixture of symphonic black metal with folk music traditionally of Bourguignonne using traditional instruments as well as male and female choruses. Yes, it was a hell of a job which took us a year, but the result was worth it

The artwork is beautiful. Who made it?

It is the work of a graphic designer of Blood Fire Death. He knew what we wanted

What were some reviews like?

As always, good and bad reviews, but overall it is rather positive. Some columnists did not understand our approach on the concept of Burgundy or the music though

How many copies have been sold now?

I do not know exactly how many, but the alb*m sold around 1000 copies from my side and we traded and gave away a few hundred. On the side of the label, Marco told me that he also sold well on his side

How did the encounter and collaboration with the label Blood Fire Death start?

We met Marco at Ragnarok Festival 3 years ago. We became friends and the following year he came to spend several days in Dijon

Has a new alb*m been written?

Not yet, just a few lyrics

Where is Baphomet's Throne?

Baphomet's Throne is a parallel project, nothing is planned ahead with this group. This is done when you have free time. 3 new tracks written, but no record date is expected

What are you listening to right now and what are the groups that you advise us to listen to?

Right now I am listening to the live Schandmaul, the new Arkona, Menhir, Finsterforst, Skyforger, Sear Bliss and many more. I listen to so many different groups. Let's say my top 10 bands would be

Nokturnal Mortum, Arkona, Therion, Emperor, Limbonic Art, Darkthrone, Skyforger, Eluveitie, Morbid Angel and Orphaned Land

The last word is yours

Thank you to you for this interview. Listen to Gloria Burgundia. Support the scene. VIVE LA BOURGOGNE! *

GLORIA BURGUNDIA

Like the night falling on the plain,
our dukedom was annexed,
to a country it was attached,
in spite of a desperate resistance

Like only one man,
your troops will rise.
Descended of the Dukes Of Occident,
in order to give back to our country,
honour and pride,
honour and pride

Gloria Burgundia.
Hope will revive.
Gloria Burgundia.
Of your chains you'll set free.
Gloria Burgundia.
Independance you will find back

Like a sun came back from nothing,
our dukedom will finally be delivered.
Centuries of suffering ended,
the splendour of our glorious past,
on our memories forever engraved.
Put together in the country,
we will make history again,
proud of our past glory

Gloria Burgundia

Masters of our destiny,
we are proud to be born here.
Masters of our destiny,
we are proud to be born here

Gloria Burgundia.
Faithful forever.
Gloria Burgundia.
For your endless glory

Gloria Burgundia.
We will be the defenders.
Gloria Burgundia.
Against all invaders.
Gloria Burgundia.
Keep the boundaries

Gloria Burgundia.
Of a thousand year old country.
Gloria Burgundia.
In which we live.
Gloria Burgundia.
History is just beginning

Like the night falling on the plain,
our dukedom was annexed,
to a country it was attached,
in spite of a desperate resistance.
Like only one man,
your troops will rise.
Descended of the Dukes Of Occident,
in order to give back to our country,

WHEN THE GOLDEN FLEECE BLAZED

In distant times,
in the history of our country,
when our dukedom lived,
free and independent,
Burgundy was the most,
powerful country in Europe.
In 1430 the year of grace,
an order was created

By our Duke Phillpe,
our golden fleece was born,
on the legend of Jason it was based,
carried by our valiant knights

On all fronts,
it was glorified

When the golden fleece blazed,
Burgundy was free.
When the golden fleece blazed,
Burgundy lived with honour

On all fronts,
it was glorified

Charles Le Te Me Raire,
ever in his last battle,
wore it with courage.
Charles Quint worshipped it *

aenglisc 29.07.10 - 08:16pm
Its actualy quite good, regardles of what t me is the main vocal sounding like a drunked gremlin. .

not as off putting as it would be a year or so back. .itd be stranger without it.

the alb*m has a great opening with bird song abruptly interupted by the chaos of battle. .
quite a mix of vocal style, not sure what song im up to, but Turisas came t mind,
maybe cause i read theyre playing at nebworth and i cant aford the trip, or that this track seems heavy on accourdian and ''hey-hey's''. Those in general i find it hard to identify a sound with the correct instrument, i will be giving it further listens *

mielikki 30.07.10 - 01:53am
Epinette? Sounds like a mix between bagpipe and a kazoo? Hehe *

6anakin6 30.07.10 - 11:20pm
Far out i still havent checked this band out yet! However i will make more of an effort and even to make more replies and topics here. *

aenglisc 31.07.10 - 03:02pm
good2.GIFwell done. Not the only one, ive been laps or the replies front from the start, just never have much t say *

OUR BELOVED COUNTRY

In this great country we are born,
cradled by these enchanted rivers,
these wonderful lands and dark forests,
that a cold winter come to caress.
In our vineyards grow some grapes,
that give a marvelous wine,
pride of all the people,
symbol of our rich land

To be Burgundian,
we are proud.
To be Burgundian,
we are proud.
To be Burgundian,
we are proud

Our beloved country,
one day was forced,
by terror and slaughter,
to join a country who without shame,
took most of our land.
Resistance was fierce,
terrible was the repression,
for our ancestors who fought,
to keep their freedom

Since that day we've lived,
under the pressure of a nation,
but secretly we prepare, [b] our Independance Day.
For the memory of our ancestors,
who died for our land,
we'll fight with courage,
until the day when our banner,
will fly once more on our land

Proud of our ancestors,
who defended with honour,
the independence of our land

We are nor French,
nor another nationality.
We are Burgundians,
above all

In this great country we will die,
on this land we will lie.
Our children will fight in their turn, [b] for the freedom of our beloved country,
on which such blood of our brave warriors,
spread since thousands of years,
to keep our culture and freedom

To be Burgundian,
we are proud.
To be Burgundian,
we are proud.
To be Burgundian,
we are proud

Joyeus enfants de la Bourgonge.
Je n'ai jamais cu de guignon.
Quand je vois rougir ma trogne.
Je suis fier d'a tre Bourgignon.
Je suis fier,
Je suis fier,
Je suis fier d'a tre Bourgignon *
