IN LUFT GERITZT
Written by PigfaceChristus

In Luft Geritzt is Dornenreichs version of folk, and you can expect that its every bit as original as their metal. Bereft of the same abused imagery of other metal turned folk acts, this alb*m is most certainly mature. It isnt about Odin spurring the Vikings on to meet certain death or Thor crushing his enemies with his hammer. No, its much more introspective than that, as In Luft Geritzt, alternates between chaos and calmness, while proceeding like an out of control dance. Not stuck in the past, Dornenreich innovate in a particularly restrictive genre in a way that is both profound and relevant to the present.

In Luft Geritzt is monolithic, not in the sense that it becomes one dimensional but more in the sense that Dornenreich know exactly what theyre going for. As a result, the alb*m has a very tangible character to it. Dornenreichs approach is hypnotic but chaotic and uses very little to cover a vast array of emotions. At first glance, the music is very bare boned, with only an acoustic guitar, a violin, and a tambourine as percussion. While each track is internally consistent with its own repetitive structures, none of the tracks go the campfire folk song route. Instead, In Luft Geritzt is comprised of songs that recall ancient pastoral festivals. The music is melodious and danceable, as the violin offers lightness and the guitar keeps, in general, to a very jostling rhythm

Evigas vocals make an already unique release even more unique. Neofolk acts like Death in June and Darkwood go for a dispassionate, anthem-like style when it comes to vocals, but Dornenreich are much more dramatic. Eviga does very little of what could be called singing. Displaying a sense for the poetic and the passionate, he whispers, gargles, and screams, but he doesnt do so at the expense of the musics beauty. In fact, his approach works very well with the alternation between chaos and calmness because Eviga will, in one moment, whisper melancholically and, in the next moment, explode with emotion

There is an odd sense of terror to In Luft Geritzt that is rarely captured in folk. The first three tracks offer a sort of brooding chaos to the atmosphere, which escalates to melancholic fury in Freitanz and Sehnlauf. Flugel in Fels, Meer and Aufbruch follow more sorrowfully, while the alb*m goes on to end on a hopeful but sad note. If In Luft Geritzt were divided into three parts, it might look like this arrangement: the fear of the storm, the coming of the storm, and the aftermath. Whatever storm it is, however, it is most certainly not an external force, but one that engrosses the listener in the act of frightful contemplation, in contrast to glorified nostalgia.

The only thing that keeps this great alb*m from being excellent is how, because of the length of the tracks, it feels as though some songs are played twice. This is in particular reference to the first four tracks, which will play all the arrangements they have to offer and then replay them for a second time after only a very slight transition. To completely switch genres for a second, this is not unlike what Vital Remains has done on some of their terrible releases. I can understand that Dornenreich wanted to make their songs more substantial because they were working with so little in the way of instruments. Because Evigas vocals are very sparse, the band could have either made the tracks more repetitive by basically doubling their length or, probably the worse option, introduced new sections that risk being digressive. Unity is better than digression for an album, but neither option is a desirable situation.

In the end, In Luft Geritzt holds up as a spectacular release because of its unique character. This is an alb*m that has never been heard before and, beyond some slight compositional flaws, it easily competes with the greatest works of the folk genre. Through its expansive inclusion of all emotions, In Luft Geritzt is the sort of alb*m to get lost in, and Dornenreich know how to hypnotize their listeners effectively

BITTER IST'S DEM TOD ZU DIENEN
Written by flowergatherer

Second alb*m by this strange, whimsical and weird band. Unlike their first alb*m that featured furious black metal more in true black metal fashion, this time round Dornenreich made a huge step forward and changed their style into gothic black with folk influences. Music has really improved a lot, became more varied, each instrument part is more elaborated, thought out and amazingly intriguing. Traces of more melodical approach were clearly noticible in their debut work but here they simply outdone themselves in terms of technical and song writing skills. Its just unbelievable that it took them only 2 years to transform from black metal newcomers into high class professional musicians!

Alb*m is comprised of 6 long pieces that last about 8 or 9 minutes each, so its a nice opportunity for a band to realize all their ideas and thoughts. Very much emphasis is put on guitar lines (both acoustic and electric). Keyboards support the atmosphere, but at times come to the foreground to perform their leading part. Vocal lines change from screams to clear singing to add this gothic feel. German lyrics supplement more mystery and obscurity to the overall musical canvas when being sung in English would lose some oddness and authenticity.

Dark music not depressive though, with moments of sunlight and calm, sadness and anger, fury and reflection. Undoubtedly this alb*m will appeal most to romanticists and daydreamers, people who are not averse to musical experimentation and even to those who enjoy classical music. Id like to mention again the guitar work. Eviga has his own personal style, that is very unique. He plays black metal like no other.

So go and get this unusual, interesting and not ordinary work by this Austrian trio
